Some of the first poems on Rhyme & Reason's Wordspace web page have come out of the 'Rhyme in Season' poetry workshop run by poet, teacher & performer John Turner, and organised by Rhyme & Reason bookshop as part of the 2004 Off the Shelf Festival during the October half-term holiday.
Children taking part in the workshop, ranging in ages from 5 to 11 years old, were invited to work in groups and write poems on the theme of Bonfire Night and also to try their hand at writing tongue twister poems along the lines of 'She sells seashells on the sea shore......'. For the perfomance, children then spoke their lines together, alternating verses with a 'backing vocal' chorus made up of words brainstormed by all the children taking part.
Children are invited to write and send poems for Wordspace. Each month there may be two prizes (£5 Rhyme & Reason book vouchers) awarded for poems, one for a poem by a writer in the 5-9 age group, the other for a poem by a writer in the 10-15 age group. Commendations may also be offerd to encourage other contributors!
Please note that poems sent to us do not have to rhyme. Nor do they have to link to the monthly themes which are offered only as suggestions for seasonal poems:
November 2004: Fireworks
December 2004: Celebrations
January 2005: New Year
February 2005: Winter landscapes
March 2005: Signs of Spring
